Oil Painting with Maggie Siner: New Approaches to Composition
“Composition is essential in the creation of a good painting. It creates expression, structure and finally meaning in painting. The pictorial principles of composition involve much more than a system of rules or the simple placement of objects. In fact, the best compositions manage to break all the rules. Composition concerns the entire relationship of parts to a whole, from the individual brushstroke to the largest shapes, including all the inner dynamics at work inside the rectangle. In this workshop we will explore compositional ideas governing the use of color; the organization of value; manipulation of pictorial space; and the role of mark-making. Students will gain new ideas, insight and skill in composition.” – Maggie Siner
